Population Genetics
The main focus of the Interreg III A project "TroutExamInvest" in the division of Population Genetics was the investigation of the genetic structure of marble trout in South Tyrol, as well as of the brown trout in South Tyrol, North Tyrol and within the area of the 'Nationalpark Hohe Tauern'. Analyses of DNA sequences and microsatellite loci provided data about the degree of hybridisation among different trout lineages. In addition, information regarding autochthonous relic populations was obtained. In this way, the division of Population Genetics made a valuable contribution to the preservation of local trout populations in accordance with the means of modern species protection.
In a second Interreg III A project, "Crayfish-Geneflow", the genetic variability of freshwater crayfish species and populations in South Tyrol and North Tyrol was explored. In recent years, the freshwater crayfish stock decreased dramatically and appropriate protection measures had to be implemented instantly.
