Passer Fish Hatchery
Countless creeks, rivers and lakes shape South Tyrol’s landscape. The indigenous diversity of fish stock is being threatened as a result of human intrusion into the eco-system; it is critical that this diversity be protected. The Fish Hatchery surveys the native fish stock and develops methods to propagate, grow and return endangered fish species to nature. In the future, the waters should return to their original population numbers with native fish species of all age groups living in natural and balanced populations. Special attention is paid to the marble trout, the grayling and the Arctic char, as well as the river and lake trout.
- Preservation of indigenous fish species and ecotypes (restricted to certain habitats)
- Development and testing of breeding methods to obtain resistant fish that are suited for repopulation of local waters
- Development of propagation techniques for difficult-to-breed fish species, such as marble trout, Arctic char and grayling
- Securing of various genetically different marble trout lineages
- Investigation of particularly advantageous waters for the repopulation with the indigenous fish stock; collaboration with the Province to re-establish native fish colonies in the region’s waters
- Development of methods for safeguarding habitats in the areas where the interests of men, fish and waters overlap
